I. First, let's look at the Usually higher rates quoted by Other Web-Builders.
They will probably exceed the ones quoted here [Quoted 11-07: certainly not the highest
rate out there, but an idea], but just so you understand where I stand:
A. Start-up fees by other web-builders are usually greater than $100+, etc;
Some packages are:
1.) Three web pages [home w/out flash or anything of the sort & 2 subpages] =
is $195 + $95/additional page;
2.) Five pages [homepage sometimes w/ flash header or something of the
sort, sitemap, 5 thumbnails [extra for more],
limited managing/troubleshooting
to (2) 1/2hr phone chats] = $480 + $80/additional page;
3.) Ten pages [homepage w/ flash header, sitemap, 10 thumbnails [extra for
more], limited managing/troubleshooting to (2) 1/2hr phone chats] =
$720 +
$60/additional page;
4.) Twenty pages [homepage w/ flash header, sitemap, 20 thumbnails ["],
limited managing/troubleshooting to (4) 1/2hr phone chats] =
$980 +
$40/additional page; etc etc etc;
With these examples, you kind of see where they are going.
B. Additional fees from Other Web-Builders:
1.) Hourly rate is typically $45-90/hour, often more;
2.) Typically, with some designers, there is an additional $fee/image
on homepage or any additional page;
3.) In addition, often additional hidden fees apply;
4.) Furthermore, there almost always is an annual webmaster/managing fee
starting at $100++/year, with restrictions on what that will cover; example of
$500/month fee to keep your business maintained and in the eyes of the search
enginges [http://www.wedowebpages.com/pricing.html].

II. My Web-Designing & Web-Building rates are:
![]()
A. My startup fee is $100
(which covers the initial conference and should get the homepage designed and most likely built/constructed, providing changes are not made after the initial
conference):
1.) This startup fee covers initial brain-storming with client
(usually 1-hr), and set-up work (not to exceed 3-hour layout & prep
by me);
2.) Any hours exceeding this initial startup are
booked at $40/hour;
3.) I do not charge for additional numbers of images
(ie: $fee/image) on that homepage
(aside from hourly rate of $40/hr above the initial timeslot, thus an additional
fee ONLY if
the homepage exceeds startup
layout/prep time of 4-hrs stated in point 1) -- -- So, you could easily &
reasonably decide to have a 1-page web
that
turns out to stand by itself (like a business card webpage), but with tons of
images (the limit on # of images is only dependant upon size requirements
of your website server & layout-work-time-factor).
B. My Additional fees include:
1.) An additional $40/hour for additional pages (OR as
mentioned above, additional hourly work on homepage beyond the initial 4-hour startup-fee);
2.) Any changes, additions, or image uploading [beyond initial startup/layout
of the homepage] all are at the $40/hour rate
[not $fee/image = I feel it could be too expensive
to go that route for an artist, so I do NOT charge by the image, as some do];
[In-other-words, beyond the homepage startup/layout-fee & hr-time-restriction, I
charge the hourly rate I've stated of $40/hr for all other work;
This additional hourly rate is for
both text & image; in other words, total layout (rather than an additional
$fee/image that others charge)];
3.) HOWEVER, if client insists upon the use of a
template provided by the website server or site-builder or on a blog-site, the
fee is $80/hr above the initial startup fee/timeslot
(I despise the use of templates);
4.) In addition, to standard webpages, image upload, meta content,
etc etc, I offer flash/slideshow/video/animation/etc; however, additional fee required for
this service
on any page;
5.) Another option: You could hire me or someone to start:
the homepage with images,
or a 3-page site
with images, or something of the sort;
then learn how to manage
your website on your own in
Web Design class
à
become your
own webmaster;
6.) If you decide not to manage your site, my additional webmaster fee is $60/year to maintain/manage the
structure with monthly tests & security checks
(comes to $5/hr usually)
(however, additional upload/work at hourly rate); however, if I find your
server to be difficult, the fee may increase after a 1-month
in advance notice to you
(Never has required an additional fee, so I
don't foresee that problem.);
C. If it works out to your advantage, I either setup a flat rate/hour OR
flat rate/page OR flat rate/image.
I ALWAYS figure every route, and give the rate that is best for the site owner
[most beneficial to the artist, in most cases].
Since I work fairly quickly, you will probably find the hourly rate to your
advantage, after the initial setup fee.
D. In addition, I'm willing to offer my help in other areas:
1.) If you don't have a server yet, for
an additional flat $25 I will attempt to find you a reasonable server that fits your needs [100s of packages out there];
2.) or I can place your web on my server, after creating
a sub-domain/directory for your temp site (+4 mailboxes) at the hourly rate for
setup, then only $25 annual fee
(cheaper than paying for a site).
3.) As a side note, I have set up a link page on my
site for "guest artists", and may ask to list your site, too.
Cross-linking our sites, encourages more exposure to your
potential patrons or
buyers.
F. I can give you names of others who do web design in our area. The only ones
I can think of right now are Adam Desio <adam@desiostudios.com>
and Ed Funk <ed@edfunkphotography.com>;
forgotten at this moment the names of others.
Hope this helps in some way with your decision-making.
The long-and-short-of-it is that you probably could set up a one-page web [with
some images] for about $80; 3- to 5-page web [with images] would probably be about
$120.
Most sites I've designed & built have been turned over to their owners to
maintain. I believe that's a healthy approach.
Sites that are still maintained by JMPT, rather than their owners:
Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts
(at 1st only clean-up, streamlined, and improved codes (& look) of previous web-designers, but now a new make-over to the front of the site) Glass Aglow Studio
(completely designed & built by JMPT Web Design &
Building)
